What I've Read

Hey everyone, I've just started Confessions of a Closet Catholic by Sarah Littman a few days ago. Although I feel kind of lost when it comes to all the Hebrew and Yiddish words this book has really opened up my eyes when it comes to the Jewish faith. The story's about Jussy Silver, a Jewish girl, who gives up being Jewish for Lent. She gets the idea of giving something up from her new best friend, a Catholic girl, named Mac, whose given up chocolate. Jussy goes to Mass with Mac and her family and later comes to find out that Bubbe, her grandma, has had a stroke. For the most part Jussy's been struggling with where her faith lies. She's given up being Jewish, so who does she pray to? Is it Jesus? Will St. Peter the "Lenten Police" punish her for becoming Jewish again?

When you walk into the library from the commons you'll see a book displayed over the first computer: Perfect Girl by Mary Hogan. This book is AMAZING! I recommend it for everyone, especially freshman girls. It's a great love story, not too mushy but it still has the feel of a major crush. Perfect Girl is about Ruthie Bayer, the result of an in vitro procedure, who lives in Odessa with her mom. The only other family she has that she's aware of is New York's Goddess of Love, Aunt Marty, who she hasn't seen or heard from in years.

If freshman year can't be hard enough, she realizes she has feelings for her neighbor, Perry, who's been her best friend since she can remember. And if that isn't enough, she notices that "Perfect Girl", Jenna Wilson, has caught Perry's eye. This is a crisis! After a phone call and a visit a 'Perry Plan' is made, but the Goddess of Love's plan doesn't work out quite well. And after a few stumbles and tears, love is still found. Good luck Freshman!

Not quite like any murder mystery you've ever read, The Lovely Bones is a book that you will never EVER forget. Lovely Bones is about Suzie Salmon, like the fish, and is told from her point of view, in Heaven. Suzie was murdered December 6, 1973 by her neighbor, Mr. Harvey. While Heaven, to many of us, is supposed to be a place of endless bliss and happiness, all it is to Suzie is a place where she can watch her family grieve, her friends wonder and her killer get away. It's way too hard to summarize the whole book, all the feelings it makes you feel, and the whispered warning. The book doesn't pound in the over used phrase "take-someone-with-you", but it lets you know what can happen. After reading this book I was still confused, sad and angry that Suzie died. But I was happy for her and what she achieved. I think every girl MUST read this. It's actually a book that my mom read and when she saw me reading it she told me to be careful. Now I see what she ment. It opens the eyes of women to a warning, a love story and more.
